So far the 92nd General Assembly is off to a bang. There is comprehensive restructuring of the state offices in the works, with over 1400+ pages being drafted. There are structured attacks on working men and women of the states’ retirement plans in the works. But strong relationships have been made over the past few years to stand in solidarity against any, and all, trying to take away the promise of a pension.
The hard work of our very own legislative director will never go unnoticed. This week HB 1299 and HB 1345 were introduced by a strong advocate for us, Representative Nicole Clowney of Fayetteville. HB 1299 brings to light the gap we face, as firefighters, with a death benefit but nothing for a disability caused from occupational cancer. HB 1345 will address the ability for all firefighters in the state to retire because of the debilitating circumstances one may face with occupational cancer. These bills are not slam dunks, but are a start to a bigger picture that needs to be painted for our state. This will also go to show firefighters in the state that this APFF will stand up for them and their livelihoods.
If you know a firefighter in Arkansas who has won or lost to occupational cancer please share the following registry.
